Trump Demands Jailing of Windy City Mayor and State Executive as Military Forces Arrive in Metropolis

Former President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday called for the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor too!"

The two leaders are members of the Democratic faction.

These remarks come alongside the arrival of state military personnel in the Chicago region under orders from the current government, notwithstanding strong objections from Illinois authorities including the governor and mayor.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump attempted to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I am staying anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, stating: "I will not yield. Now Trump is demanding arrests of elected officials checking his power. What remains on the road toward complete authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, military troops from Texas had arrived at the Elwood training facility, an army base roughly 80 kilometers from the city, as the federal government pushes forward with its aggressive urban crime policy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "dangerous disaster zone", even though police data indicate significant drops in most criminal activities, including homicides.

That day, 200 Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with another 300 Illinois guard personnel readying for deployment, per reports. Officials indicated the soldiers would avoid law enforcement duties but would secure federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Military personnel in combat attire with Texas national guard patches were spotted at the military facility in Elwood. Vehicles marked "Disaster Relief" delivered portable toilets and other supplies. Mobile units were arranged in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities imposed no-fly zones over the army reserve center for safety concerns until early December.

The administration has escalated immigration enforcement in the city in the past month, sparking demonstrations, particularly near an immigration center in Broadview.

Earlier this week, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit targeting the federal government, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, urging a court to stop what they describe as "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on Chicago and Illinois, calling it "illegal and risky".

A court hearing on their case is scheduled for the next day.

The mayor also issued an executive order on that day prohibiting ICE officers and related personnel from using municipal facilities as staging areas for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has accused Trump of using troops as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Pritzker said that the president is trying to "rationalize and make acceptable the deployment of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old federal law restricts the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. Yet, the president has stated he would be willing to activate the emergency powers, which allows a commander-in-chief to dispatch active duty military in states that are unable to suppress an uprising or are resisting national authority.

After beginning his second term, Trump has dispatched or discussed deploying troops to at least 10 urban centers, such as Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, claiming that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and defend immigration agents.

Data indicates that serious offenses across the US has declined in recent years. In Chicago, for example, homicides were down 31% to under three hundred through late summer, according to police data.

New survey data published on that day revealed that most Americans oppose the sending of military forces without an foreign danger.
